President Donald Trump is initiating a series of one-time $90 payments to approximately 20 million seniors enrolled in Medicare Part B. According to a White House breakdown reviewed by the media, these payments are being distributed across all 50 states, with the largest disbursements going to the nation's most populous states.
The administration is utilizing these direct payments as a strategy to address voter anxiety regarding high costs and affordability, which currently present significant liabilities for Republicans attempting to maintain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. To finance the initiative, the Trump administration is reallocating $2 billion from the Medicare Improvement Fund, a resource established by Congress in 2008 that the White House claims has never been utilized. In a post on Truth Social announcing the program, Trump referred to the fund as a "pointless 'Slush Fund'."
Distribution figures show that California leads the nation with more than 1.52 million seniors set to receive the payments. Other states with high recipient counts include Texas with 1.43 million, Florida with 1.40 million, New York with 1.02 million, and Pennsylvania with 905,000. Conversely, Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, and South Dakota will each receive fewer than 100,000 checks.
The payments are also reaching seniors in key Senate battleground states. This includes 748,000 seniors in Ohio, 644,000 in North Carolina, 568,000 in Georgia, 539,000 in Michigan, 327,000 in Iowa, 293,000 in Kansas, and 88,000 in Maine.
The White House stated that the majority of eligible seniors will receive the funds via direct deposit in early October. Those who are not enrolled in direct deposit will receive a physical check mailed to the address provided during their Medicare registration.
