President Donald Trump has experienced a decline in support from Republican voters as the November midterm elections draw closer. According to a survey conducted by the NBC News Decision Desk between Aug. 20 and Sept. 1, there has been a notable shift in how Republicans view the president's job performance.
Data expert Steve Kornacki reported that the percentage of Republicans who "strongly approve" of the president's performance has dropped by nearly 10 percentage points. While 52% of Republican respondents expressed strong approval in polling conducted during March and April, that figure has now fallen to 41%. Simultaneously, the segment of Republican voters who "somewhat approve" has increased to 39%, up from 31% in earlier months.
The survey, which involved 7,105 adults and carries a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percentage points, placed Trump’s overall approval rating at 36%. This figure represents a record low for the president in NBC polling during his current term and approaches the 33% low recorded in a Reuters poll published last month. These findings arrive as the public faces economic concerns and uncertainty surrounding the ongoing war with Iran.
Despite historical trends indicating that the party holding the presidency typically loses seats in both the House and Senate during midterms, President Trump remains optimistic. During an appearance on Fox News' "Sunday Night In America With Trey Gowdy" on Aug. 30, Trump stated, "For some reason, the voters tend to go the other way. I think we're gonna do very well."
To bolster support, President Trump and Vice President JD Vance are scheduled to attend the first GOP midterm convention in recent history next week. The event in Dallas is intended to mobilize voters before the party shifts its focus to key swing states in the final push toward Election Day.
The polling comes as Americans brace for the final quarter of the year amid economic fears and growing uncertainty about the Iran war.
