President Donald Trump’s job approval rating experienced a minor recovery this week, according to data from an Economist/YouGov poll released on Tuesday, Aug. 4. The survey indicates that 36% of Americans now approve of his performance in office. While this represents a 2 percentage point improvement over the previous week’s findings—which recorded a 34% approval rate—the president’s numbers continue to linger near record lows.
Public sentiment regarding the country's trajectory remains largely pessimistic. The recent poll, conducted between July 31 and Aug. 3 among 1,609 adults, found that 64% of Americans believe the nation is heading in the wrong direction. In contrast, only 30% of respondents feel the country is moving in the right direction. The poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
Despite the prevailing negative outlook on the president and the state of the country, Democrats have seen minimal political gains. On a generic congressional ballot, Democrats maintain a 4 percentage point lead over Republicans, a margin that has remained unchanged since the prior week. However, voters appear to favor Democrats on economic issues. A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Aug. 3 revealed that 37% of respondents prefer Democrats over the GOP regarding economic policy, marking the first time in a decade of polling that Democrats have led in this specific metric.
Dissatisfaction with the economy remains widespread, as 57% of respondents told Economist/YouGov that economic conditions are deteriorating, while only 16% believe they are improving. Additionally, 70% of Americans reported that gas prices have risen substantially over the past year. According to AAA, the national average price for a gallon of gas was $4.08 on Aug. 4, compared to $3.15 on the same date in 2025.
