Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, has publicly voiced her hope that the Italian public will oppose a controversial antisemitism bill currently under consideration in the nation's parliament. In a post on X, Albanese questioned the necessity of the legislation, asking, "Why on earth should Israeli culture be taught in Italy?"

Albanese characterized the bill as part of a broader "Israelisation of society" that she claims is being advocated by elites within both the government and segments of the opposition. Describing the legislative proposal as an "announced shame," she stated, "History is us," and urged the Italian people to take a stand against it.

Known as DDL 1004, the bill was introduced by the far-right League party, which serves as a junior partner in Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition government. The proposed law seeks to implement criteria established by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) to define antisemitism. Having passed through the Senate in March, the bill is currently awaiting final approval from the Chamber of Deputies.

Public opposition to the legislation manifested in Milan on Thursday, where hundreds of protesters gathered to demonstrate against the bill. Participants held signs with slogans such as "No to the antisemitism bill," "Criticising Israel is not antisemitism," and "Protest is a right," while also chanting "Free Palestine."
