Political transition negotiations between representatives of Venezuela's opposition and the interim government have officially commenced in Caracas. An AFP photographer confirmed the start of the proceedings on Thursday at the Simon Bolivar Park Convention Center, located in the La Carlota neighbourhood. The session took place within the confines of the La Carlota military base, with access restricted strictly to photographers and no public statements anticipated following the meeting.
These discussions occur seven months after the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro by US forces, as interim leader Delcy Rodriguez continues to govern under the observation of Washington. The US State Department expressed support for the initiative, welcoming the arrival of the opposition delegation led by Dinorah Figuera and describing the direct talks as a unique opportunity to achieve tangible results for the Venezuelan population.
The opposition delegation is headed by Figuera, who returned to Venezuela from exile on Wednesday. Representing the government side is National Assembly Chief Jorge Rodriguez, who is the brother of the interim leader. Notably, opposition figure Maria Corina Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate currently living in exile, was not invited to participate in the dialogue. Despite her exclusion, Machado has indicated she does not intend to hinder the process.
According to the official agenda released by the participating parties, the dialogue will focus on strengthening democracy and political rights. Additionally, the representatives are set to address the national response to the twin earthquakes that occurred on June 24, a disaster which resulted in more than 6,000 deaths. Many Venezuelans are looking toward these talks with the hope that they will ultimately facilitate the path to future elections in the crisis-stricken nation.
