A massive fire broke out at the Na Ladprao pub in northern Bangkok early Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 27 people. First responders reported that the blaze was called in around midnight, with footage shared online showing thick black smoke billowing from the entrance as patrons attempted to escape the building.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul arrived at the scene and confirmed the death toll, noting that several injured individuals have been transported to hospitals for treatment. According to the Prime Minister, many of the victims were discovered in the restrooms located at the back of the establishment. The cause of the fire remains under official investigation.
One musician who was performing at the pub provided an account of the moments leading up to the disaster, stating that he observed smoke emanating from a circuit breaker near the stage. Shortly after the power failed, an explosion was heard and the venue was rapidly consumed by dense smoke.
Firefighters took about half an hour to bring the fire under control. Photos of the aftermath show charred tables and chairs, and the damaged interior of the pub. This incident follows a history of similar tragedies in Thailand, including a 2022 fire at an eastern music pub that killed 14 people. Furthermore, in one of the country’s deadliest incidents, 66 people died and over 200 were injured during a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Santika nightclub in Bangkok on Jan. 1, 2009, when an indoor fireworks display sparked a major fire.
