A violent encounter near a Toronto street festival on Saturday evening resulted in the deaths of 2 men and left 4 other people wounded. The incident occurred at approximately 8:12 p.m. in the vicinity of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, where the annual Salsa on St. Clair festival was taking place.
Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo stated that the violence stemmed from an exchange of gunfire between 2 individuals who were targeting one another. While the event initially triggered concerns regarding an active shooter, Barredo clarified during a late-night news conference that this was not the case. However, he emphasized that the 2 gunmen involved acted with a reckless disregard for public safety, indiscriminately placing a vast number of festival-goers in danger.
Investigators have recovered 2 firearms from the scene. As of late Saturday night, authorities had not yet made any arrests. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the gunfire erupted. Valerie Rodriguez, who was sitting near a restaurant, recounted that people began screaming and running, while others instructed those nearby to lie on the floor. Vendor Patsy Gutierrez noted that she was serving customers when she witnessed a massive wave of people fleeing the area, prompting her to stop operations.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her anger and distress over the incident, noting that the violence occurred in the heart of a festival attended by families. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also issued a statement on social media, expressing his devastation over the loss of life and the injuries sustained by attendees.
While Toronto is generally considered one of North America's safest major cities, Barredo acknowledged that the city is not immune to such violence. Fatal shootings involving multiple victims in public spaces remain relatively rare in the city of 3 million people. A significant police presence was maintained around the festival site following the shooting to secure the area.
No suspect or suspects had been arrested by the time of a late-night news conference, where Barredo confirmed both of the deceased victims were men.Officers initially urged the public to avoid the area before later announcing the scene had been secured.“There was some concern about an active shooter.
“I don’t think it should be something that’s happening at these types of events.”A large police presence remained around the festival, an annual celebration of Latin American culture that draws thousands of people to Toronto’s St.
