One person has died following a shooting involving federal U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel in Biddeford, Maine. State House Speaker Ryan Fecteau confirmed the incident took place on the morning of Monday, July 13, in the city located approximately 15 miles south of Portland. 1 person was confirmed dead at the scene.
Regarding the ongoing investigation, Fecteau stated that the Maine State Police and the Department of Public Safety are currently on the scene gathering details. He added that federal involvement is expected, noting, "I would expect the FBI to investigate as well." ICE did not provide an immediate response to requests for comment.
U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree, a Democrat representing Maine, addressed the incident on social media. In a video posted to X, Pingree expressed her awareness of the situation and offered her condolences to the family of the deceased and the Biddeford community. "I am so deeply disturbed and angry," she said, noting that her office is actively working to determine exactly what transpired.
This event follows a series of recent incidents involving federal officers. Less than a week prior, an ICE agent in Houston, Texas, fatally shot an individual identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. These cases have intensified scrutiny regarding the actions of federal agents, following the earlier fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal officers in Minneapolis.
