Senator Mitch McConnell announced on August 6 that he has been discharged from a rehabilitation center. The former Republican majority leader's departure from the facility comes 53 days after he was rushed to a hospital, an extended absence that had sparked significant speculation regarding his health and his future in office.
In a statement issued by his Senate office, the 84-year-old Kentucky senator confirmed he was discharged earlier in the day and plans to continue his recovery at home. McConnell did not specify whether his home is located in Kentucky or Washington, D.C.
Reflecting on his time in care, McConnell stated, "Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff." He noted that, per his doctors' advice, he will maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home throughout the state work period, while continuing to engage with his staff and colleagues on Senate business.
McConnell has not appeared in the Senate since his initial hospitalization on June 14, which followed a fall and a pneumonia diagnosis. His office had provided limited details during his recovery, which led to widespread criticism from both Democrats and some members of his own party. He broke his public silence on July 12, confirming he was hospitalized after a fall that left him briefly unconscious, and later noted on July 27 that he remained in "intense physical therapy," forcing him to miss the annual Fancy Farm picnic in Kentucky.
McConnell, who previously decided against running for reelection for an eighth term, is scheduled to conclude his 41-year Senate career on January 3, 2027. Under a 2024 change in Kentucky law, a special election would be held to fill his seat should he be unable to complete his term, shifting the authority away from Governor Andy Beshear.
