Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv shortly after midnight, while separate strikes in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia left at least five people dead and 20 others injured on Tuesday.
Residents in Kyiv reported hearing several loud explosions shortly after air raid sirens began to sound across the city. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed on social media that the capital was "under ballistic missile attack." Following the blasts, emergency services were dispatched to the city's Shevchenkivsky district, though further details were not immediately available. Additionally, Kyiv's military administration reported that warehouses in a central district had caught fire as a result of the strikes.
In Zaporizhzhia, Russian bombardment caused significant casualties. Ivan Fedorov, the head of the regional military administration, announced on Telegram that five people were killed and 20 others were wounded. Fedorov noted that the casualty count continued to rise following what he described as an "enemy attack on Zaporizhzhia."
The latest wave of bombardments comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Moscow is preparing to deploy additional North Korean troops and has received new ballistic missiles from Pyongyang. Russia has intensified its use of ballistic missiles in recent weeks. These weapons can generally only be intercepted by advanced air defense systems such as the US-supplied Patriot.
However, Ukraine's supply of PAC-3 interceptor missiles has faced worsening shortages, a situation compounded by the conflict launched by the United States and Israel against Iran in February. In response to the ongoing Russian onslaught, Ukraine has also ramped up its own strikes targeting Russian cities located far from the border.
