President Recep Tayyip Erdogan marked a significant political milestone on Friday, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Türkiye’s governing Justice and Development (AK) Party. Speaking at an anniversary event held at the Capital National Garden in Ankara, Erdogan reflected on the movement's history, describing the occasion as a “very special, historic day.” He noted that the party has fundamentally transformed the nation since its founding.
Founded on August 14, 2001, following Erdogan’s tenure as the mayor of Istanbul, the party quickly established itself as a dominant force in the country’s political landscape. Erdogan emphasized that the party was born as the “hope of our nation” and has maintained deep roots among voters. Since its inception, the movement has achieved an electoral record unmatched in Türkiye’s multiparty era, which began in 1946. Over the last quarter-century, the party’s journey has produced four prime ministers and two presidents, all through successive election victories. During the event, Erdogan was also unanimously elected chairman at the party's Founders' Board meeting.
Reflecting on the party's impact, the President noted that the movement has delivered major projects and investments across sectors including the economy, health, education, and transportation, while fostering a sense of national confidence. He credited the party’s longevity to the trust placed in them by voters, stating that the movement had effectively utilized its mandate and resources to develop and strengthen the country.
Looking toward the future, Erdogan dismissed suggestions that the party should slow down after 25 years in power. “We have accomplished great things over a quarter century, but it is not finished,” he stated, adding, “No one should expect us to get tired.” He emphasized that the movement is “just getting started” and remains committed to guiding Türkiye toward its long-term objectives for 2053 and 2071. “We still have a lot of work to do,” he told his supporters, vowing that the AK Party would continue to shape the future of the country.
