President Donald Trump has called on the Senate to move forward with the immediate confirmation of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. This push comes just one day after the president suggested he might temporarily withdraw the nomination due to ongoing opposition from Republican lawmakers.
The confirmation process has been complicated by a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund linked to a settlement involving the president’s lawsuit against the IRS. The settlement had initially offered protections from tax audits for the president, his two eldest sons, and their business, while also establishing the fund intended for individuals claiming legal abuse by the government. Although a federal judge later voided the settlement and blocked the fund, and Blanche testified before a Senate Judiciary hearing on June 2 that the project would not proceed, some senators remain concerned that the fund could be reinstated.
Republican senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis have been among the most vocal critics, seeking firm guarantees that the fund will not return. In a social media post on July 31, President Trump criticized Cornyn, arguing that victims of government abuse deserve compensation for the harm they have endured. Trump stated that the fund would support “great American Patriots who were hunted down like dogs and whose lives were unfairly and illegally destroyed by the Crooked Joe Biden Administration.”
Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley opted to cancel a planned vote on Blanche’s nomination on July 30 as concerns from Cornyn and Tillis persisted. While Cornyn lost his primary election to a candidate backed by Trump and Tillis is not seeking re-election, the president previously indicated he might hold the nomination until those specific senators were out of office. Despite these tensions, Trump continues to describe Blanche as a “good man” who should be confirmed without delay.
