Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has received a provisional suspension from professional tennis following a positive test for cocaine. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced that the suspension has been in effect since August 4, after a sample collected during a tournament in Mallorca, Spain, in June was found to contain benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

In a lengthy post on Instagram, the 31-year-old former Wimbledon finalist acknowledged the test result, admitting he "made a huge mistake and I take full responsibility for it." He extended apologies to his fans, family, sponsors, and those close to him. "Above all, I'm sorry to the kids who follow me," Kyrgios wrote. "I know the example this sets and I'm deeply disappointed in myself."

Kyrgios, once ranked as high as world number 13, has fallen to 919th in the world rankings following a series of persistent injuries. He has participated in just four singles matches this season. Although he secured a wild card to compete in the doubles tournament at Wimbledon in July alongside partner Alexander Bublik, the pair was eliminated in the first round. Last year, he secured his first major victory in over two years at the Miami Open.

Under the provisional ban, Kyrgios is barred from playing in or coaching at any events organized or sanctioned by tennis's global governing bodies or national associations. According to the ITIA, while he holds the right to appeal the provisional suspension, he "has not done so to date."

Explaining his recent state, Kyrgios noted that the physical toll of his career has been immense. "I'm not going to make excuses, but I do want to give some context about where I've been," he stated. "The last couple of years of injuries have taken a huge toll on me, both physically and mentally. My body hasn't been able to do what my mind expects it to do, and coming to terms with being near the end of my career has been harder than I ever imagined."

He described the difficulty of moving on from the sport, saying, "Letting go of something that has been my whole life is one of the hardest things I've ever had to face. At times I've felt helpless and alone," before adding, "None of that excuses what I did." Kyrgios also announced he would step away from public life and social media for a month to focus on his recovery.

Throughout his career, Kyrgios has been a polarizing figure in tennis, known for his on-court outbursts, including yelling obscenities, clashing with chair umpires, and smashing rackets. His career has also been marked by off-court controversies. In 2015, he drew criticism for making a derogatory comment to an opponent about another player sleeping with his girlfriend. In 2023, he admitted to assaulting his former partner by pushing her onto a sidewalk two years prior, an incident for which he avoided a criminal conviction. A year later, he apologized for sharing a post by Andrew Tate, a controversial influencer accused of rape and sex trafficking.

Kyrgios has previously been vocal about doping issues within tennis, criticizing high-profile cases involving top players like Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek. In 2024, he remarked on the handling of those situations, saying, "I just think that it's been handled horrifically in our sport. Two world number ones both getting done for doping is disgusting for our sport." He added that it was "a horrible look" and asserted, "Someone like me … I would never even in my entire life ever try and dope in this sport." Years earlier, during a U.S. Open match in New York, Kyrgios complained to an official that he was distracted by what he believed was the smell of marijuana coming from the stands.
