The Israeli army has officially ordered a criminal investigation into the death of five-year-old Hind Rajab, a Palestinian child whose killing sparked international condemnation after a harrowing recording of her final moments was shared globally. The incident occurred in January 2024, when a vehicle carrying seven family members came under Israeli fire while attempting to flee bombing in Gaza City.

Hind Rajab survived the initial attack that killed several of her relatives, but she remained trapped in the vehicle. She managed to contact the Palestine Red Crescent Society, and a recorded phone call with paramedics lasted for hours as she pleaded for rescue. Her pleas were silenced when the phone line was cut amid the sound of further gunfire. The bodies of Hind, her family members, and the two paramedics who had been dispatched in an ambulance to save her were recovered days later.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it would initiate a criminal investigation into the incident, to be conducted by the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division. The military stated the decision followed a review of findings and was prompted by alleged failures in the coordination of the movement of the Palestine Red Crescent ambulance. This development marks the first time the IDF has admitted to opening fire on the vehicle carrying Hind and her family. In previous statements, the IDF had claimed that its initial investigation suggested no Israeli troops were present in the area at the time of the incident.
