Right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Louisiana, according to federal records. The British native, who previously advocated for aggressive immigration checkpoints and immediate deportations, was taken into custody on August 27 at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport for overstaying his visa.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Yiannopoulos had violated immigration laws by overstaying a visa that dates back to 2019. According to a DHS spokesperson, an immigration judge had already issued a final order of removal on July 22 after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for his scheduled immigration hearing. The spokesperson added that Yiannopoulos chose to overstay his welcome and will remain in ICE custody pending his removal from the country.
His detention stands in stark contrast to his past political commentary. In June 2025, Yiannopoulos publicly championed ICE on the social media platform X, using his handle Nero to call for extreme enforcement measures. He suggested that California should implement ICE checkpoints at locations such as supermarkets, gas stations, strip malls, intersections, and government buildings to facilitate the "on the spot" deportation of anyone unable to prove legal residency.
Yiannopoulos originally rose to prominence as a right-wing commentator and Breitbart News writer in the years leading up to the first Trump administration, drawing controversy for university tours targeting feminism, Islam, the Black Lives Matter movement, and transgender issues. More recently, he has worked on-and-off with rapper Kanye West since 2022, serving as West's campaign manager during his 2024 presidential run. TMZ, which first reported the arrest, noted that Yiannopoulos was in Louisiana ahead of an August 28 concert headlined by West.
