Hamas has accused the Israeli military of systematically clearing, crushing, and transporting debris in Gaza to destroy forensic evidence of war crimes and genocide. The Palestinian group warned that the bodies of thousands of missing people remain trapped beneath the ruins, and tampering with these sites directly violates international legal orders to preserve evidence.
According to an official statement from Hamas, these actions are a deliberate attempt by the Israeli government and its army to cover up atrocities committed over the course of the conflict. The group emphasized that the rubble contains vital material evidence of crimes as well as the remains of victims. Hamas stated that altering these locations constitutes a severe breach of international law and the International Court of Justice's directives, while also violating the dignity of the deceased and denying families their right to recover and bury their loved ones.
In its statement, Hamas welcomed a warning from Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Palestinian territories, who noted that clearing debris in Gaza risks erasing traces of atrocity crimes. Hamas has urged the United Nations and the International Criminal Court to protect these sites and immediately dispatch international forensic investigators to oversee the recovery of bodies and document vital evidence. While acknowledging that clearing rubble is a critical humanitarian and national necessity for rebuilding, Hamas insisted that the process must not be used by Israel to escape accountability.
The scale of the debris removal was highlighted in a report by the Geneva-based Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor. The monitor revealed that commercial Israeli companies have been active across military-occupied zones, which encompass roughly 66 percent of the Gaza Strip. It estimated that at least 10 million tonnes of rubble have already been displaced or crushed, with approximately 100 trucks and 400 demolition and crushing machines operating daily to transport the debris out of Gaza. Over the two-year conflict, Israeli military actions have killed more than 73,000 Palestinians, wounded over 174,000, and left more than 9,000 missing under the destroyed infrastructure.
