Lionel Messi achieved a major milestone by scoring his 100th goal for Inter Miami during the team's 2-0 victory over Mexican side Cruz Azul. The match, which took place on Wednesday at Nu Stadium in Florida, saw the Major League Soccer side claim the Campeones Cup title.
Playing in his 115th appearance for the club, Messi opened the scoring 24 minutes into the match, which annually features the MLS Cup holders against the winners of Mexico's Campeon de Campeones. Casemiro added a second goal for Miami late in the game to secure the win.
Reflecting on the achievement, Miami coach Cristian Gonzalez said, “Leo told me he’d make me a champion, so he kept his word.”
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, the 39-year-old former Barcelona and Paris St Germain forward has been instrumental in the team's success, helping them secure four trophies. Messi, who holds the record as Argentina's all-time top footballer with 125 goals, recently announced his international retirement. He is scheduled to make his final appearance for the national team in a friendly match against Benin on October 6.
