United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has formally called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, issuing the appeal ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7 events. In an official statement, Guterres emphasized that the time has come to establish a permanent end to hostilities, facilitate humanitarian assistance at scale, and ensure full respect for international law. He urged the international community to forge a political path toward lasting peace across the entire region.
Guterres stressed that the upcoming anniversary should serve as more than a period of mourning. He expressed a desire for it to mark a renewed determination to build a different future, one where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in peace and security, with their rights, dignity, and aspirations fulfilled. Highlighting the severe human cost of the conflict, Guterres noted that Palestinians have endured massive loss of life, displacement, and destruction, declaring that their suffering demands an immediate end.
Official reports indicate that Israel's years-long war in the enclave has resulted in the deaths of more than 74,200 people. While Guterres acknowledged that a temporary ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump in October 2025 provided limited relief, he warned that the agreement has yet to deliver adequate humanitarian assistance, security, or a credible path to recovery and peace.
The conflict has widened significantly since October 2023, with Israel expanding its military operations across the region. This includes the invasion of southern Lebanon and, as of late February, direct armed conflict against Iran alongside the United States.
