Santa Ana winds, high temperatures, and low humidity have driven fast-moving wildfires across Southern California, damaging multi-million dollar residences south of Los Angeles and triggering widespread evacuations. The Norte fire, which erupted in the affluent municipality of San Juan Capistrano in Orange County, has scorched approximately 465 acres and impacted at least four homes as flames quickly spread through tinder-dry hillside vegetation.
Firefighters are aggressively attacking the Norte blaze from both ground and air, deploying multiple helicopters to douse the burning terrain as emergency officials repeatedly urge residents and the public to stay clear of the area. Beyond the immediate threat of flames, authorities have warned nearby residents of dangerously poor air quality caused by thick smoke billowing across neighboring communities.
Precautionary power cutoffs left tens of thousands of customers without electricity across Los Angeles County after utility operators de-energized lines to prevent strong wind gusts from igniting dry brush. Peak winds roared between 80 and 110 kilometers per hour in mountainous zones, while coastal and valley regions recorded gusts from 55 to 90 kilometers per hour. Unseasonably hot weather compounded the risk, with local temperatures reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius.
Emergency crews are also tackling other significant brush fires across Southern California. On the outskirts of the Malibu beach community, the Bryson fire broke out overnight and grew to 147 acres with 17 percent containment by Friday afternoon, according to the state firefighting agency Cal Fire. Meanwhile, the Henderson Fire impacted Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, forcing freeway closures after burning at least 2,070 acres.
The National Weather Service cautioned that high fire danger will extend through much of Saturday, citing an elevated risk of rapid fire growth across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, as well as the mountains and foothills of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Weather officials instructed local residents to remain prepared for potential emergency evacuations and warned drivers to navigate carefully against strong crosswinds on elevated roads.
