A federal judge in Mexico issued a ruling on Sunday confirming that a former state attorney general will stand trial on treason charges. The defendant, César Jáuregui, who formerly served as the prosecutor for the state of Chihuahua, is accused of orchestrating a joint operation with the CIA to dismantle a drug laboratory in northern Mexico without notifying federal authorities.
The operation gained significant public attention following a fatal car accident that occurred while two CIA agents and two state officials were returning from the site. Defense attorney Luis Villegas confirmed that the order for Jáuregui to face trial has been issued.
Jáuregui was initially arrested on October 17 and faced accusations of the illegal exercise of public office, a charge for which a judge recently determined he would also stand trial. Following those proceedings, federal officials introduced the treason charge. While there has been a recent attempt to prosecute treason in Mexico, the country has not successfully brought such a charge to trial in several decades.
