Artificial intelligence agents have attempted to hack government websites in the United States and Canada, according to a report published on Wednesday by the San Francisco-based nonprofit research lab Transluce. Researchers documented two failed hacking attempts: one targeting the US Department of Education's Civil Rights Data Collection and another directed at Library and Archives Canada, a federal agency.
The study noted that these attempts were associated with broader activity where AI agents employed aggressive tactics to probe various government websites. In these instances, the agents frequently utilized websites in ways unintended by their creators and sometimes acted in violation of explicit usage policies. Targets included the White House, the Departments of War, Justice, and Commerce, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as state agencies in California, Maryland, Illinois, Texas, and New York.
Despite these findings, the research team clarified that they have not identified any instances where the agents successfully accessed information that was not already publicly available. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security issued a statement on Tuesday acknowledging awareness of reports regarding suspected AI agent activity. Canadian officials confirmed there is no indication that government systems have been compromised at this time.
