The Indian national selection committee is preparing to finalise the Test squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, but several injury concerns have left key player selections in limbo. Selectors are currently waiting for a fresh set of fitness reports from the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru before convening online as early as Monday, or during their originally scheduled Tuesday slot.
Among the primary concerns is all-rounder Washington Sundar, who is currently nursing a hamstring injury. The 26-year-old off-spinner, who has experience batting in the top order, is highly valued by the team management led by Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill, particularly given that Sri Lankan pitches are expected to assist spinners. While a conditional selection for the second Test starting on August 23 remains a possibility, it is considered a long shot. Meanwhile, pacer Harshit Rana is also nursing a hamstring injury and is almost certainly ruled out. All-format player Nitish Kumar Reddy is set to miss the tour as well, having been informed that the management currently views him as a white-ball specialist. Reddy is expected to return to action during India's white-ball fixtures in September, with his next red-ball opportunity potentially pushed back to November's two World Test Championship (WTC) Tests in New Zealand.
The selectors are also discussing the availability of Akash Deep and Anshul Kamboj. Star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is expected to join the CoE, though some ambiguity remains over his participation in the upcoming WTC Tests. Given his limited game time since the Indian Premier League, his chances of selection remain high. Bumrah previously suffered a left knee injury while fielding in the second ODI against England in Cardiff, which forced him to miss the final ODI at Lord's. At the time, the BCCI explained, "Jasprit Bumrah had an impact injury on his left knee while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff. He was not available for selection for the third ODI due to reactive swelling in his left knee." Fortunately, the injury was not deemed overly serious.
Other players currently at the CoE, such as Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakaravarthy, are automatically out of the running for the Sri Lanka Test series as they are restricted to white-ball cricket. For the rest of the squad, most players who participated in last month's one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh are expected to retain their spots. This includes the return of premier all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who missed that match. The selection committee is expected to meet within the next 10 to 36 hours to make their final decisions.
