A pregnant Palestinian woman lost her foetus following a significant delay by Israeli forces at a military checkpoint in the occupied West Bank. According to reports from the Palestinian news agency Wafa, citing Qaryut ambulance officer Bashar Al-Qaryouti, the incident occurred at the Awarta military checkpoint south of Nablus.
Al-Qaryouti stated that the ambulance crew was held at the checkpoint for more than 30 minutes after Israeli forces closed the gates, preventing the vehicle from passing. At the time, the woman was six months pregnant and experiencing severe bleeding. Despite her critical medical condition, the ambulance crew was forced to undergo a search. Furthermore, Al-Qaryouti reported that soldiers ordered the crew to turn off the ambulance engine, which resulted in the shutdown of essential onboard medical support equipment.
The ambulance was eventually permitted to proceed to a hospital. While doctors were able to save the woman's life, they were unable to save her foetus. There has been no immediate comment from the Israeli army regarding the incident.
This event takes place amid heightened movement restrictions imposed by Israeli forces throughout the occupied West Bank. Over the past two days, the military has closed multiple checkpoints surrounding the Ramallah, Nablus, and Hebron governorates, as well as several checkpoints north of occupied East Jerusalem. These actions have caused severe traffic congestion and disrupted the movement of Palestinians. The current escalation follows violence that began on Friday, when four Palestinians were killed and four others were injured during a confrontation with Israeli settlers, who were supported by the Israeli army, in the town of Tal, southwest of Nablus. Since that time, military raids and arrests have been reported across the territory, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatening to expand operations.
