Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. is expected to avoid jail time regarding the felony charges he faced following a domestic violence incident earlier this year. Despite this legal progress, the NFL issued an eight-game suspension to Pearce on Friday, marking another significant setback for the Falcons as they navigate the start of Kevin Stefanski’s first season as head coach.
The team’s roster depth has been tested recently, as the Falcons also lost linebacker Jalon Walker for the season earlier this month due to a torn ACL in his left knee. Like Pearce, Walker was a first-round selection in last year's draft. Following a 27-7 preseason loss to the Denver Broncos, Stefanski addressed the league's decision regarding Pearce.
"Not going to comment on the length of the suspension or those types of things," Stefanski said. "We trust the process that is in place. James continues to do everything in his power to be a great teammate and work very hard on himself, inside and outside the building. Obviously, we were anticipating a suspension, so we’ve been intentional about how we planned it."
Because the suspension does not take effect until August 30, Pearce remains eligible to participate in training camp and play throughout the remainder of the preseason. Stefanski noted that the team intends to utilize Pearce during these games before he is required to be away from the building once the suspension begins. "So, he’ll continue to work and continue to play in these games and then when the suspension takes place, he’ll be away from the building," the coach added. "We’ll have a plan and he’ll have a plan as well. But just keep our head down and continue to work."
The Falcons are currently facing multiple roster challenges. Beyond the losses of Pearce and Walker, the team’s quarterback competition has been hindered by Michael Penix Jr.’s recovery from a torn ACL. Furthermore, Tua Tagovailoa, who is competing for the starting role, began camp with a back injury and struggled during Friday’s game. Third-string quarterback Cooper Rush also faced difficulties, throwing two interceptions, one of which was returned 97 yards for a touchdown.
