Southern Brave have solidified their position at the top of the points table, securing their fourth straight victory with a 24-run win over the winless Birmingham Phoenix. The win brings the Brave to 16 points, while the Phoenix remain at the bottom of the standings.
Batting first, Southern Brave reached a total of 140 runs for the loss of three wickets in their 100 balls. Lizelle Lee anchored the powerplay with an explosive 43 off 28 balls, featuring seven boundaries and two sixes. Maia Bouchier complemented her with a 31-ball 45, hitting eight boundaries. The pair combined for a 68-run opening partnership, followed by a 29-run stand between Bouchier and Laura Wolvaardt. Jemimah Rodrigues provided a crucial late surge, scoring 28 not out from 18 balls, including three fours in her final five deliveries.
In response, Birmingham Phoenix appeared to be in a strong position during their chase of 141. Openers Tammy Beaumont and Davina Perrin put together a brisk 73-run partnership off 56 balls. However, the momentum shifted after the strategic timeout, with 54 runs still required from 30 balls. The chase lost steam when Alice Capsey was dismissed by a Lauren Bell slower ball, followed shortly by the crucial wicket of Perrin, who was caught by Bouchier off Sarah Glenn’s bowling after hitting a 40-ball half-century. Perrin had received three reprieves during her innings.
Southern Brave captain Sophie Molineux tightened the pressure by taking two quick wickets, effectively stifling the chase. Despite late boundaries from Ellyse Perry, the Phoenix could not recover and finished on 116/5. Brief scores: Southern Brave 140/3 in 100 balls (Maia Bouchier 45, Lizelle Lee 43, Jemimah Rodrigues 28*; Alana King 1-23, Alice Capsey 1-23) beat Birmingham Phoenix 116/5 in 100 balls (Davina Perrin 52, Tammy Beaumont 22; Sophie Molineux 2-24) by 24 runs.
Earlier in the day, it was Lee's explosive hand in the powerplay that led the way for Brave.
The South African chipped in a 43 in just 28 balls, seven boundaries and two sixes included.
