Netflix is officially winding down the specific business division that originally helped establish the company as a household name. The streaming giant announced on Tuesday that it will discontinue its DVD rental service, marking the end of the iconic red envelopes that defined the company's early years.
The company confirmed the timeline for the closure on Twitter, stating, "On September 29th, 2023, we will send out the last red envelope." In the same message, the company expressed that it has been a true pleasure and honor to deliver movie nights to its members for the past 25 years.
Co-CEO Ted Sarandos provided further context regarding the decision in a blog post published Tuesday. He noted that while the company's goal has always been to provide the best service possible, the ongoing decline of the DVD market makes maintaining that standard increasingly difficult. Sarandos described the decision to make 2023 the "Final Season" as a way to ensure the quality of service remains high through the final day of operations.
The announcement coincided with the company's latest financial update. Netflix reported a miss for its second-quarter earnings after the market closed on Tuesday, a development that saw the company's shares fall by approximately 6%.
