The latest Forbes 400 list, which tracks the country's wealthiest individuals, indicates that the financial gap among the ultra-rich is continuing to expand. According to the report, the 400 people who qualified for the list hold a combined net worth of $8 trillion. The minimum net worth required to secure a spot on the list has climbed to an unprecedented $4.4 billion. Despite this high barrier to entry, 34 newcomers were still able to make the cut.

The concentration of wealth remains stark, as the top 20 individuals on the list account for 50% of the total combined net worth. This figure represents an increase of $970 billion compared to the 2025 data. Meanwhile, the wealth gap is underscored by the fact that 590 American billionaires were considered too poor to qualify for the annual ranking.

Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO and former leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), claimed the No. 1 spot for the fifth year in a row. Musk, who also leads the magazine's global real-time billionaires list, became the first person to surpass the $900 billion mark on the Forbes 400. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos followed in second place, trailing Musk by more than $500 billion. Other prominent figures, including Mark Zuckerberg, remain among the top 10.

Forbes compiled the 2026 list using wealth estimates calculated as of September 4. The full list of the top 50 and the complete 400 rankings are available on the Forbes website.
