Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is at the center of a growing debate regarding how the organization is managing his development. Selected third overall in the 2026 NFL draft, Love has become a major topic of discussion as the preseason approaches, though the conversation has recently shifted toward his coaching staff's public messaging.
During Sunday's practice, offensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon appeared to temper expectations regarding the rookie's immediate role. Gannon told the media, "He's definitely a rookie. And he'll keep growing every single day." These remarks drew significant criticism from fans and NFL reporter John Frascella, who compared the situation to past handling of other high-profile prospects. Frascella expressed his disapproval on social media, stating, "Why START by putting down your star rookie to the media? Chip Kelly did the same thing with Ashton Jeanty last year. … This is how you start: 'Jeremiyah Love is a stud. Can't wait for the NFL world to see what he can do.'"
Despite the skepticism from coaching staff, Love has found a vocal supporter in quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Fresh off securing a new one-year, $15.5-million contract, Brissett praised the rookie's work ethic. "I haven't (gone) with Jeremiyah yet, but being able to be here and watch him practice and do his thing, I see why we paid him $50 million," Brissett noted on Sunday.
Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur also offered a positive assessment of the rookie last week, highlighting his character. "What a mature young man. He’s been awesome with the locker room. He is himself, but he also has some awareness that he’s a rookie," LaFleur said. He further shared his appreciation for Love’s background, adding, "When I got a chance to meet his parents, and even before, just seeing it Saturdays watching College GameDay and the tidbits they had, you kind of knew right there, what a foundation this guy — how lucky to have the situation he had growing up." The Cardinals are scheduled to resume practice sessions on Tuesday.
