A devastating explosion at a coal mine in southern Pakistan has claimed the lives of at least 34 workers, according to provincial disaster management officials.
The provincial disaster management authority in Balochistan confirmed on Friday that rescue teams deployed to the site had recovered 34 bodies. Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing as emergency responders look for additional miners, with at least 30 workers initially feared trapped following the blast.
Fatal accidents are a frequent occurrence within Pakistan's coal mining sector, particularly in Balochistan. Many operations in the region are notorious for lacking basic safety measures, including proper ventilation and gas monitoring systems. Labor organizations and mine workers have repeatedly accused mine owners of neglecting safety protocols and failing to supply necessary protective gear.
Despite the severe dangers and low pay, the coal industry remains a vital source of livelihood for thousands of workers in Balochistan. As Pakistan's largest but least developed province, Balochistan continues to grapple with widespread poverty and high rates of unemployment.
