US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has identified the presence of a "foreign actor" behind a suspected security plot near a British military installation used by the United States. Speaking to Fox News, Rubio characterized the events that occurred over the weekend at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, south-west England, as a "very serious situation." While the Secretary noted that there were specific details he could not disclose publicly, he indicated that further information regarding the suspected foreign involvement might be revealed in the coming days.
The incident led to the arrest of five men by British counterterrorism police on Sunday. The suspects, all British nationals from London in their early 20s, were detained after a local farmer alerted authorities to three white vans traveling toward the base. While the five men were subsequently released on bail as the investigation proceeds, police confirmed on Monday that they are examining whether the individuals were acting on behalf of a foreign state.
RAF Fairford serves as a strategic location used by the US military and has previously housed American bombers deployed for regional operations. Rubio expressed appreciation for the cooperation of British authorities, stating, "I do want to thank the authorities in the United Kingdom, who have been very cooperative and on top of it." He added that US officials are maintaining ongoing engagement with their British counterparts regarding the arrests and the current status of the suspects.
The Secretary placed the event within a broader context of threats to US interests globally, specifically highlighting Iran. Rubio remarked that Iranian actors have openly threatened American interests, asserting that the United States treats such concerns with high priority. US President Donald Trump also addressed the situation on Monday, expressing surprise at the decision to release the suspects on bail. While noting that British authorities had worked closely with the United States, Trump stated, "I'm surprised that they released them, I wouldn't have done that. We know everything about them. We would not have released them." The President further suggested the incident "might be" linked to Iran but declined to provide additional details.
