A relentless series of Russian aerial attacks struck multiple locations across Ukraine on Monday, resulting in at least seven confirmed deaths and more than 50 injuries. The strikes, which targeted both civilian infrastructure and administrative buildings, hit sites in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and the Chernihiv region.
In the capital city of Kyiv, Russian forces launched a daytime attack that struck several locations, including apartment buildings, offices, data centers, and a building belonging to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The impact on the academy was severe enough that journalists on the scene were forced to seek shelter shortly after arriving due to continued weapon fire in the area.
According to Russia's Defense Ministry, their forces specifically targeted two data centers and various gas stations within the capital.
Casualties were reported across the country as Moscow's forces expanded their offensive. In the central city of Dnipro, a drone strike hit an office center during working hours, killing three people and injuring at least 12 others. Meanwhile, a nine-story apartment building in the northeastern city of Kharkiv was struck by a Russian weapon, leaving 43 people wounded, among them 11 children.
In the Kyiv region specifically, separate drone attacks resulted in four deaths and eight injuries. Additionally, in northern Ukraine’s Chernihiv region, a drone strike on a residential area on Sunday evening injured four individuals, including two teenage girls, as reported by Viacheslav Chaus, the head of the regional military administration.
The Russian military also targeted economic infrastructure, including a Nova Poshta postal service distribution hub in Odesa. In the Black Sea, the ministry claimed to have hit two cargo ships, one of which was located in the Ukrainian port of Chornomorsk, in an effort to disrupt grain exports. These actions follow a week of diplomatic discussions at the United Nations regarding potential peace negotiations.
However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that the prospects for a rapid peace settlement remain bleak, warning that Ukraine would have to pay a price for recent actions, including reported Ukrainian activity during Russian parliamentary elections.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking at the U.N. General Assembly on Saturday, accused Europe of thwarting peace talks that the Trump administration is interested in pursuing.
On the battlefield, Ukraine’s Third Army Corps reported gaining 20 square miles of territory in the Donetsk region, bringing their total gains to 68 square miles since the start of Operation Vivaldi. The corps stated that they utilized converted Soviet-era BTR-60 armored vehicles as kamikaze weapons and employed ground robots to breach fortifications.
Conversely, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed control over the villages of Novovodiane in Donetsk and Ulanove in the Sumy region. These claims from both sides could not be independently verified.
In response to the Russian bombardment, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that long-range drone strikes had targeted defense plants in the Tula and Voronezh regions, as well as oil facilities in Krasnodar. Local emergency officials in the Krasnodar region reported fires at three infrastructure facilities following the overnight drone activity, while the Russian Defense Ministry stated that its air defenses intercepted 254 Ukrainian drones.
The attacks followed a week of diplomatic efforts at the United Nations to get traction for negotiations on ending Moscow's full-scale invasion that began 4½ years ago.
Battlefield positions have changed little since last year, in part because swarms of drones severely restrict troop movements, but Kyiv's forces launched a recent offensive, code-named Operation Vivaldi, on part of the 800-mile front line.
