US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to visit Russia and Ukraine this weekend as diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing war appear to be gaining momentum. The two envoys are expected to arrive in Moscow on Saturday for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin before traveling to Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that he will meet with the pair on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters, President Donald Trump indicated that the envoys are carrying a specific proposal intended to bring the conflict to an end. While Kushner, who is Trump's son-in-law, and Witkoff have traveled to Russia on previous occasions, this visit represents their first diplomatic engagement in Ukraine. Ahead of the trip, President Zelensky requested that both Russia and Ukraine guarantee the safety of their respective airspaces for the duration of the envoys' visit, stating he would provide such a guarantee for the Russian side.
The diplomatic mission coincides with ongoing hostilities. On Friday, President Zelensky reported that a Russian drone struck the Kyiv office of Ukraine’s security chief, Oleksandr Poklad. Although the official, who leads the SBU security service, appeared to be unharmed, Zelensky stated he had directed him to respond appropriately to the attack. Russia currently maintains control over approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory following its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Reports from Russia's state news agency, Tass, cited a source confirming the travel window for September 5-6. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that while he would not make an official announcement, the Kremlin would provide updates once contacts occur. Peskov emphasized that any resolution must be agreed upon between Moscow and Kyiv, though he showed no indication of softening his government's maximalist demands, which include significant territorial concessions from Ukraine. These terms have been consistently rejected by Kyiv and its European allies as tantamount to capitulation.
