U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled that the United States intends to continue its military campaign against Iran, vowing to hit the nation “very hard” until a meaningful diplomatic resolution can be reached. Speaking to reporters on Friday at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, Trump stated that the U.S.
simply wants to “win” in the region and suggested that military operations are expected to persist for the foreseeable future.
The administration’s stance was reiterated on Friday evening by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who expressed frustration over Tehran’s recent actions. Leavitt accused Iran of violating a memorandum of understanding signed last month regarding a truce, alleging that the country subsequently opened fire on commercial vessels and caused the deaths of American soldiers.
She stated that President Trump will not tolerate such “terrorist behavior” and warned that Iran will continue to pay until they come to the table in a way that the President deems meaningful.
Regional instability has escalated significantly as the U.S. pushes to secure the Strait of Hormuz. On Saturday, the British Navy reported that a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile 11 nautical miles northeast of Lima, Oman, on Friday, resulting in damage to the vessel’s engine room.
A separate incident occurred on Saturday involving a large splash and an explosion near another tanker sailing 21 nautical miles northwest of Khasab city.
No casualties were reported in either event. Iran has frequently targeted vessels attempting to traverse the strait without authorization as part of its ongoing conflict with the United States.
Kuwait also reported a new round of drone attacks on Saturday. Maj. Gen. Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, spokesman for the Kuwaiti Defense Ministry, confirmed that drones hit “a number of vital facilities,” including a government structure in the country's north, though he noted there were no casualties.
In the Gaza Strip, intense Israeli military strikes on Friday night resulted in at least two deaths and dozens of injuries, according to local health officials. The strikes followed evacuation orders issued by the Israeli military, which stated it was striking Hamas.
This violence occurred despite a prior agreement calling for Hamas to disarm and hand over power to an independent Palestinian administration, with Israel to withdraw and an International Stabilization Force to be deployed.
Additional developments across the region include Houthi rebels forcing eight Saudi ships to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope to avoid a blockade in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, the Houthi military spokesman, confirmed the rerouting on Friday.
In southern Lebanon, Israeli forces utilized explosions on Friday to destroy an underground tunnel network beneath the 12th-century Beaufort Castle, which Israel claims was used by Hezbollah as a command center.
The castle, also known as Al-Shaqif, was seized by Israeli forces in May and was recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List over Israel’s objections. Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun said the operation sent “negative messages” ahead of upcoming negotiations in Rome, where teams are expected to continue hammering out a plan for Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in exchange for Hezbollah’s disarmament.
