Two people have died and eleven others were rescued following a fire on a commercial vessel that subsequently sank in the Black Sea. The incident occurred on Monday within Romania’s exclusive economic zone, approximately 30 nautical miles, or 55 kilometers, south of Sfantul Gheorghe in Tulcea County.
Romania’s Interior Ministry stated that the Coast Guard was alerted to the emergency at around 11 a.m. local time. Following the distress alert, a rescue operation was launched. The ministry confirmed that eleven crew members were successfully rescued, while the bodies of two deceased individuals were also located. A helicopter was deployed to the scene to airlift injured survivors using a winch, ensuring they could receive immediate medical care.
While the cause of the fire remains officially unidentified by the ministry, local Romanian news channels reported that the ship was a Turkish vessel transporting grain. These reports suggested the vessel had been struck by a drone southeast of a Black Sea oil platform; however, authorities have not confirmed these claims.
