A large-scale Ukrainian drone strike on the Russian republic of Tatarstan has resulted in at least 13 deaths, including one child, and left 75 other people injured. The incident, described as one of the deadliest single attacks on Russian territory since the full-scale war began, impacted the city of Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
While Kyiv has not issued a formal comment on the strike, Ukraine's Armed Forces confirmed the operation targeted the Tanevo oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk. The Ukrainian defence technology manufacturer FirePoint stated that its FP-1 drones were utilized in the attack, which persisted from overnight into the following morning. Verified social media imagery from the scene depicts thick plumes of smoke and flames rising into the air as air raid sirens sounded throughout the area.
Russian authorities, including the Investigative Committee, reported that the strikes hit both industrial facilities and residential zones. The committee asserted that the casualties included civilians who were not involved in any military operations. Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of Tatarstan, acknowledged the strike and extended his condolences to the bereaved families, while Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belayev described the event as a source of tremendous pain for the community. In response to the tragedy, a period of mourning has been officially declared in the republic.
Moscow reported that its air defences intercepted more than 450 Ukrainian drones during the overnight period. This latest strike follows a previous attack by Ukrainian forces on oil refineries in Nizhnekamsk on 12 June. In the broader context of the ongoing conflict, Russia continues to conduct its own large-scale aerial campaigns against Ukrainian cities. Recent Russian strikes in Kyiv resulted in 21 deaths, while an artillery attack in Kharkiv left five people dead.
