Across the border in British Columbia, Canada, the situation reached a critical point as the Bald Range Fire nearly doubled in size overnight. The blaze prompted officials to order the evacuation of more than 20,000 people in the Summerland area, located 150 miles east of Vancouver. Ravi Parmar, the minister of forests for British Columbia, noted that the scale of the emergency necessitated a shift in resources, stating, "Aerial response teams were converted to emergency evacuation personnel. Eighteen of our aircraft were used to rescue more than 50 individuals." A province-wide state of emergency was declared on Saturday to manage the ongoing threat.
In Washington, the impact of recent fires remains visible. Blazes near Spokane destroyed nearly 1,000 structures last week. While some evacuation orders were lifted on Sunday, Sheriff John Nowels confirmed that the most severely affected neighborhoods remain closed while crews continue to clear hazardous materials and monitor for hot spots. Officials have not yet provided a timeline for when displaced residents will be permitted to return to their homes.
