North Korea Launches Ballistic Missile Amid DMZ Mine Tension

North Korea has launched at least one ballistic missile toward the East Sea, according to South Korea's military, escalating tensions on the peninsula just a day after Pyongyang rejected demands for an apology over a border landmine incident.

Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on Saturday that the missile was detected flying from the Wonsan area of North Korea toward the East Sea, which is also known as the Sea of Japan.

The launch comes amid a sharp war of words following a landmine explosion inside the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) last month that left three South Korean soldiers wounded. The heavily fortified DMZ has served as a buffer zone between the two nations since the 1953 armistice.

Both South Korea and the United States-led United Nations Command have concluded that the blast was caused by North Korean landmines laid on the southern side of the border. Earlier this week, South Korea's military demanded an official apology from Pyongyang.

Following that demand, South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung urged the North to return to dialogue. However, Pyongyang has firmly denied any involvement in the incident. On Friday, Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of the North Korean leader, dismissed the accusations and called South Korea "despicable" for demanding an apology.
