The co-pilot suspected of carrying out a mid-air attack on an Israel-bound FlyDubai flight has been identified as Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani national. According to officials from the United Arab Emirates, al-Hammami attacked the captain with the cockpit's crash axe before attempting to seize control of the aircraft in what has been described as a "terrorist attack."
The incident nearly resulted in a catastrophic crash as the plane, carrying 182 people, began plummeting sharply before passengers and others managed to intervene and stop the assault. Information regarding the suspect's identity was disclosed by three individuals with knowledge of the situation, including a Gulf diplomat and a Western diplomat. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
The Gulf diplomat said investigations are underway to establish whether he acted alone. A separate source familiar with the investigation, also speaking anonymously, revealed that Oman had previously barred the co-pilot from flying due to concerns that he had adopted extremist views.
In other regional developments, a hospital in Gaza reported that recent Israeli military strikes have killed five people, including two individuals belonging to the Palestinian territory's Christian minority. Meanwhile, a fire was reported at an oil facility in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, though authorities have not released any details regarding the cause of the blaze.
