North Korea has fired at least one projectile toward its eastern waters, according to South Korea's military, marking the latest in a recent series of weapons demonstrations. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff reported the launch on Monday but did not immediately specify whether the weapon was ballistic or provide details regarding the distance it traveled.

The office of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also confirmed the detection of the launch, characterizing the weapon as a suspected ballistic missile. This latest activity follows a test conducted by South Korea on Friday, during which the country flight-tested its first domestically developed hypersonic weapon. Designed to travel at least five times the speed of sound, the weapon is intended to evade existing missile defense systems. President Lee Jae Myung described that test as a vital advancement in strengthening the South's conventional defense capabilities.

North Korea has been aggressively expanding its arsenal of nuclear-capable systems while maintaining a hard-line stance toward Seoul. This includes an October 3 test of what the North described as a hypersonic intermediate-range missile, which was also designed to bypass missile defenses in both South Korea and Japan.

Regional tensions have been further exacerbated by a land mine incident last month near the heavily armed inter-Korean border, which resulted in injuries to three South Korean soldiers. An investigation conducted by the South’s military and the U.S.-led United Nations Command concluded that the explosions were caused by devices planted by North Korea. Pyongyang has denied responsibility for the incident and has ridiculed the South’s demands for an apology.
