The U.S. government has issued a formal travel alert for American citizens planning to visit Mexicali, located in northern Mexico. Alongside the advisory, U.S. officials have temporarily suspended all consular activities in the city, citing an unspecified “potential threat.” The notice, which was released Monday night, provided no specific details regarding the nature of the threat or the intended targets.
In the wake of the announcement, the U.S. government urged its citizens to exercise caution by avoiding government buildings and remaining aware of their surroundings. Americans currently in the area were advised to seek shelter should any incident occur. Mexicali, which serves as the capital of Baja California state and sits directly across the border from the U.S. city of Calexico, is a major population center with more than 1 million residents and significant cross-border commercial and social ties.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the situation during her Tuesday morning press conference, stating that the alert originated from information provided by U.S. agencies regarding “the possibility of a criminal group.” While Sheinbaum noted that there was no further information regarding the specifics of the threat, she emphasized the need for continued surveillance in the city.
Although the city remained calm throughout Tuesday, Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila confirmed in an overnight message on her X account that Mexican authorities remained active and that security operations would be reinforced in the state capital. Later that afternoon, President Sheinbaum’s security cabinet issued a statement clarifying that while authorities have “not identified any elements confirming a specific or imminent risk to the population,” they have increased patrols and surveillance in Mexicali as a precautionary measure.
