The Vatican confirmed on Monday that Pope Leo XIV will proceed with his scheduled travel to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6-17. Medical professionals have determined that there are no health-related obstacles preventing the pontiff from undertaking the trip, which occurs just three weeks after he underwent surgery for lung cancer.
According to the Vatican press office, the pope’s recovery is progressing as expected, aligning with favorable evaluations provided by his medical team. Consequently, the Vatican stated that the pope will keep his ambitious travel itinerary intact, with no modifications to the planned program. The surgery, which took place on October 13, marked the first major health procedure of Leo’s 17-month pontificate. During the operation, surgeons removed a lung lobe where a malignant nodule was discovered, subsequently confirming a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma, the most prevalent form of lung cancer.
Since returning to the Vatican, the pope has gradually resumed his duties while adjusting his daily schedule to prioritize necessary periods of rest and recovery. Dr. Luigi Carbone, the pope’s personal physician, stated that there is no medical reason to prevent the upcoming journey to South America, which will require the pope to undertake a dozen flights and two helicopter trips to reach high-altitude locations.
Reflecting on the upcoming visit, Pope Leo expressed his gratitude for the prayers and support received during his recovery. He noted his eagerness to return to a region where he spent significant portions of his life. “I am looking forward to returning to the continent where I’ve experienced so many moments of my life,” the pope said on Monday. “May this journey be an occasion for us to open our hearts to one another, strengthen our communion as brothers and sisters, and renew our commitment to proclaiming the Gospel with joy.” The Vatican emphasized that the visit serves as an opportunity for the pope to bolster ties with local churches, offer encouragement to the faithful, and promote messages of faith, hope, and peace across Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru.
