The Joburg Super Kings have officially appointed former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel as their new head coach for the fifth season of the SA20 league. Morkel steps into the position following the departure of Fleming, who served as the team's head coach for the first four seasons.
Morkel is a familiar face within the organization, having been associated with the Joburg Super Kings franchise since the inaugural season of the SA20 tournament. His history with the Super Kings brand also extends to his playing days, where he previously represented the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Rupa Gurunath, the owner of the Super Kings, highlighted Morkel's long-standing contribution to the group, noting that he has been an invaluable member of the coaching staff. According to Gurunath, Morkel has played a significant role in player development behind the scenes and has built strong relationships with both players and staff. She expressed excitement about his new leadership role and his capacity to guide the team into its next chapter.
The appointment was also welcomed by KS Viswanathan, the Director of the Joburg Super Kings, who emphasized that Morkel’s deep understanding of the franchise's culture, gained through his dual experience as both a player and a coach, makes him a strong fit for the leadership position. Viswanathan stated that Morkel's understanding of the South African cricket landscape provides the organization with great confidence for the future.
Reflecting on his new appointment, Morkel described it as an incredible honour. He expressed his enthusiasm for leading the franchise, noting that the journey from wearing the Super Kings jersey as a player to now leading the team as head coach is a special transition. He added that he looks forward to building upon the foundations already established and helping the team reach its full potential.
The team’s recent performance saw them finish fourth in the league stage earlier this year before being eliminated in the subsequent knockout round.
