Stephen Fleming has been appointed as the new head coach for the England men's Test team. The move sees Joe Root return to the position of full-time captain, a role he previously held for a record 64 Tests between 2017 and 2022 before stepping down.
Fleming, 53, will not immediately take the reins for the upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to begin at Headingley on August 19. Marcus Trescothick has been named as the interim coach for that series. Fleming is currently spending time with his family following the conclusion of an 18-year association with the IPL franchise CSK, where he secured five titles. He is expected to arrive in the UK later this summer to commence preparations for the Test tour of South Africa, starting in December.
The appointment of Fleming, who maintains a strong personal and business relationship with white-ball coach Brendon McCullum, followed a recruitment process led by managing director Rob Key. After initial frontrunner Andy Flower ruled himself out, Fleming emerged as the standout candidate from a field that included Jonathan Trott, Richard Dawson, and Tom Moody.
Reflecting on his new role, Fleming expressed his excitement at joining the England setup and his intent to work closely with the current squad, including Harry Brook. He noted that his goal is to help young talent reach their potential while building on the work established by McCullum and Ben Stokes. Fleming also highlighted his desire to support Root, calling him a generational talent. "I'm particularly looking forward to working with Joe Root as captain – a generational talent who has achieved so much already. There is still plenty more to come from him, and I'm excited to support him so he can enjoy and thrive in the role in what is a different context to his first stint."
Root’s return to the captaincy follows the sudden international retirement of Ben Stokes at the conclusion of the New Zealand series. Although Root briefly stepped back into the role during the second Test against New Zealand at the Kia Oval—following an incident involving Stokes—he had previously expressed that the pressures of the job had taken a toll. However, the ECB confirmed on Tuesday that the team's leading run-scorer is back in the role full-time. "I know what it feels like to have the weight of leadership and international cricket take their toll, and when that happened to me, my love for the game was rekindled by going to Notts and winning the County Championship. English cricket gave that to me and it is a privilege to have this chance to give something back."
Rob Key praised the pairing of Fleming and Root, stating that he believes Fleming is the ideal person to turn the team's potential into sustained, world-class performance. Key also noted that Root will now have the opportunity to lead without the specific Covid-19 restrictions that hampered his previous tenure. Stephen Fleming, Joe Root, and Marcus Trescothick will now oversee the upcoming schedule, including the Pakistan tour of England, the England tour of South Africa, and the ICC World Test Championship.
