Ariana Grande will take an extended break from the public eye and public-facing work following the conclusion of her Eternal Sunshine Tour, her representative confirmed in a statement on August 2. The decision comes after a highly active year for the 33-year-old pop star and actress, during which she navigated intense public scrutiny alongside major professional milestones.
The singer's 41-date tour, which concludes its North American leg on August 6, is scheduled to wrap up on September 1 after a 10-night residency at London's O2 Arena. According to a statement first shared with People, Grande is eager to finish the tour on a high note, both healthily and happily, before beginning her much-deserved hiatus. The representative noted that the relentless public scrutiny surrounding her career and personal life prompted the decision to step away from visibility.
In addition to her hiatus from public appearances, Grande has canceled her planned West End debut scheduled for next summer. She was set to star alongside her "Wicked" costar Jonathan Bailey in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical "Sunday in the Park with George," as reported by People, The Hollywood Reporter, and Deadline.
The hiatus follows a tumultuous year in the spotlight. Grande promoted the upcoming "Wicked" films, toured for the first time in six years, released her eighth studio album, and ended a three-year relationship. She also quietly broke up with her "Wicked" costar Ethan Slater earlier this year. During her current tour, she made headlines for altering the lyrics of her hit song "Thank U, Next" to reference an ex-boyfriend, while also facing persistent online commentary regarding her physical appearance.
The scrutiny intensified last winter during promotional events for "Wicked: For Good."
