Christa Pike, a 50-year-old death row inmate, has been discharged from the hospital and returned to the prison where she has spent the last 30 years, according to a statement released by her lawyers on Saturday. While she is no longer in the hospital, her legal team confirmed that she is continuing to receive medical care within the prison facility.

Pike’s case has moved into uncharted territory, as she is believed to be the only person to have survived an execution attempt by lethal injection. On 30 September, the state administered two lethal injections of the drug pentobarbital, which left the inmate in critical condition and necessitated her transport to a local hospital. Earlier this week, she regained consciousness and began speaking, a development that stunned medical staff, experts, and her own legal representatives. Her lawyers noted that upon waking, her first words were, "Where am I?" and "Who are you?"

In their statement, her lawyers said, "She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances."

The legal future of the case remains uncertain. During a court hearing on Wednesday, Tennessee Assistant Attorney General Will Ayers informed the judge that he does not know whether the state intends to reschedule Pike's execution. Pike was 18 years old when she and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, beat, tortured, and killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The two had met Slemmer at a job training camp for low-income young people.
