Elon Musk is preparing to address investors on Tuesday during the first quarterly earnings call for SpaceX since the company launched its initial public offering. The session comes at a challenging time, with SpaceX shares trading at $114.46 as of Monday, marking a significant decline from the June IPO price of $135 and the peak of $225.

Market participants have expressed concerns that Musk may have provided an overly optimistic outlook for the company's future. Adding to the pressure is the upcoming expiration of a lockup provision this Thursday, which will allow company insiders to sell more than 900,000 shares. This release, the first of several tranches scheduled over the next few months, will more than double the amount of stock currently available for public trading.

During the call, Musk is expected to field questions regarding the development timeline of the Starship rocket, which NASA intends to utilize for future moon missions. Investors are also likely to inquire about the company's satellite network strategy and the potential for deploying orbital datacenters the size of football fields. While speculation persists regarding a potential merger between SpaceX and Musk’s electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla, analysts expect few concrete details; Musk has previously cited securities regulations as a barrier to discussing such a combination.

Financially, SpaceX is currently operating at a loss. Projections suggest that net losses for the first half of this year may exceed the $5 billion reported for the entirety of last year. However, some analysts remain optimistic, forecasting a rebound that could return the company to profitability by the end of the year. Beyond its primary aerospace efforts, SpaceX manages the Starlink satellite communication business, which serves as a major revenue generator, alongside a money-losing AI venture featuring the Grok tool and the social media platform X.

Operational progress continues, as SpaceX recently achieved a successful satellite deployment during a Starship test late last month following an earlier abandoned launch. Future testing objectives may involve using giant mechanical arms at the Texas Starbase facility to capture the rocket and its booster during their return to Earth.
