Eight members of a liberal South Korean student group were detained on Tuesday after attempting to enter a US air base located south of Seoul.
The activists, who belong to the Korean Progressive University Student Union (KPUSU), were detained at the K-55 Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, situated about 60 kilometers south of the capital. According to local police, the group breached the main gate of the military facility. Six of the activists managed to enter the compound while chanting anti-US slogans, including statements opposing the US 7th Air Force, while the remaining two were stopped at the entrance.
US Forces Korea (USFK) initially detained the protesters before transferring them to South Korean police custody for further investigation.
Following the demonstration, the KPUSU stated on social media that the protest was organized to oppose US military actions that they claim are obstructing South Korea's plans to build a semiconductor manufacturing cluster in Gwangju. The South Korean government has designated a military airport in the southwestern city of Gwangju as the site for the proposed chip production hub, but the US military has raised concerns that relocating the airport could affect its military interests. The student group also cited a recent white phosphorus leak at Osan Air Base as another reason for their protest.
