Four people have died following a helicopter crash in a small town located 50km (31 miles) from Montreal, according to Quebec provincial police. Emergency services were dispatched to the site in Sainte-Brigide-d'Iberville shortly after 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT) on Saturday afternoon.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered the aircraft engulfed in flames and declared all occupants dead at the scene. Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau stated that while the victims have not yet been identified, the aircraft appeared to be a private helicopter. The process of identification is expected to take a few days.
The crash site is situated near the Rang des Écossais road, located off Highway 10. Authorities were initially alerted to the incident through an emergency call regarding a helicopter in distress that may have crashed and caught fire. By approximately 15:30 local time, the fire at the scene had been brought under control, though officials continued their work at the location until just before 22:00.
A formal investigation into the circumstances of the crash is currently underway. The Major Crime Unit of the Sûreté du Québec is leading the inquiry, working in coordination with crime scene technicians and investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
