Inter's search for a wide player comes after Denzel Dumfries completed a transfer to Real Madrid. While the Nerazzurri had identified Al-Ittihad's Moussa Diaby as a primary target—either on loan or in a package deal involving midfielder Kristjan Asllani—the move presents significant financial hurdles. Al-Ittihad paid €60 million to sign Diaby from Aston Villa in 2024, and his substantial wage package is currently beyond the means of the reigning Serie A champions. Sportitalia reports that a deal for Diaby would only be viable if the Saudi Arabian club agreed to cover a portion of his salary.

As a result, Inter is exploring other options, including Nico Gonzalez. Transfer market expert Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the Nerazzurri have already initiated contact with the player's representatives. Gonzalez, who is under contract with Juventus until June 2029, is reportedly available on a loan deal with an option to buy, making him a highly feasible target for the 2026–27 season.

However, Inter faces stiff competition from Roma. The Giallorossi have been seeking a player for this role ever since Gian Piero Gasperini took charge at the Stadio Olimpico. Roma views the World Cup-winning Argentine as a strong alternative to RB Leipzig's Antonio Nusa, as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new campaign.
