The potential trade involving NBA star Kawhi Leonard remains in a state of limbo as the league continues an investigation into the LA Clippers. The proposed deal, which would send Leonard to the Toronto Raptors, is currently on hold while the NBA examines allegations that the Clippers improperly utilized an additional $28 million in off-the-books endorsement money to circumvent the league's salary cap.
The trade package initially agreed upon includes Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two future second-round selections. However, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reported that the Raptors have been presented with a difficult choice regarding the risks associated with the league's eventual findings. According to Shelburne, the Raptors have indicated they are not willing to assume the potential fallout if the investigation concludes with penalties specifically impacting Leonard.
The current situation has created a scenario where Leonard could potentially return to the LA Clippers for the 2026-27 season if the trade is ultimately voided. Shelburne noted that the Clippers are reportedly comfortable with this possibility, as their primary conflict with the player stems from stalled contract extension negotiations rather than a desire to move on. Despite the uncertainty, the Toronto Raptors issued a statement on Thursday clarifying their position. The team confirmed they were informed by the NBA league office that they would be required to assume the risk of any potential outcome resulting from the investigation.
The Raptors expressed that they remain eager to acquire Leonard, viewing him as a central figure for their future championship aspirations. Should the trade proceed, it would mark Leonard's second stint with the franchise. He previously played for Toronto during the 2018-19 season after being traded by the San Antonio Spurs, a year that culminated in the team's first NBA championship before he departed for the Clippers.
